Initially, the body is cooled by a special receptor in the nervous system called TRPM8, which is responsible for alerting the brain that cold is everywhere. For example, as soon as the body or skin touches something cold or cold air,  these receptors are activated and alert the brain to cold and hypothermia.

Scientists have found that the menthol present in mint leaves binds to the TRPM8 protein and  activates it immediately. When activated, a cold will begin in the mouth when chewing mint gum.If you say it or take it, the menthol stays in your mouth. Here's the secret if you drink water after drinking alcohol. You are cold from head to mouth.

I add that the brain doesn't understand if it's really hot, and what's important  is to activate the receptor. As long as there's a signal from the collector, it's already there. A change in temperature, even when an agent activates this receptor, such as a chemical or light.

So the brain has nothing to do with how the signal comes in. It is important that the signal from the heat receptors reach the brain after they are activated.

By the way...we found the TRPM8 receptor for colds and we have a type of receptor called TRP_V1 but it's superheat. Like the menthol compound in mint leaves, it is the cause of the common cold.

We also have the chemical compound capsaicin in hot peppers. As soon as you start eating, it starts activating the TRP_V1 receptor and anything hot like cayenne pepper makes us  cold.
